Participatory noise mapping works! An evaluation of participatory sensing as an alternative to standard techniques for environmental monitoring

چکیده
Participatory sensing enables a person-centric collection of environmental measurement datawith, in principle, high granularity in space and time. In this paperweprovide concrete proof that participatory techniques, when implemented properly, can achieve the same accuracy as standard noise mapping techniques. We do this through a citizen science experiment for noise mapping a 1 km2 area in the city of Antwerp using NoiseTube, a participatory sensing framework for monitoring ambient noise. At the technical side, we set up measuring equipment in accordance with official norms insofar as they apply, also carrying out extensive calibration experiments. At the citizen side, we collaboratedwith up to 13 volunteers from a citizen-led Antwerp-based action group. From the data gathered we construct purely measurement-based noise maps of the target area with error margins comparable to those of official simulation-based noise maps. We also report on a survey evaluating NoiseTube, as a system for participative grassroots noise mapping campaigns, from the user perspective. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Extending Participatory Sensing to Personal Exposure Using Microscopic Land Use Regression Models
Personal exposure is sensitive to the personal features and behavior of the individual, and including interpersonal variability will improve the health and quality of life evaluations. Participatory sensing assesses the spatial and temporal variability of environmental indicators and is used to quantify this interpersonal variability. Transferring the participatory sensing information to a spec...
متن کاملEnvironmental sensitivity of flash flood hazard using geospatial techniques
Flash flood has been increasing in the Khartoum area, Sudan due to geographical conditions and climatic change as heavy rainfall and high temperature, therefore the present work tried to estimate the sensitivity of flash flood. The present work proposes an advanced technique of flood sensitivity mapping using the method of analytical hierarchy process. Ten factors as elevation, slope, distance ...
متن کاملA Multi-Stage Method for Connecting Participatory Sensing and Noise Simulations
Most simulation-based noise maps are important for official noise assessment but lack local noise characteristics. The main reasons for this lack of information are that official noise simulations only provide information about expected noise levels, which is limited by the use of large-scale monitoring of noise sources, and are updated infrequently. With the emergence of smart cities and ubiqu...
متن کاملInland wetlands mapping and vulnerability assessment using an integrated geographic information system and remote sensing techniques
The understanding of inland wetlands’ distribution and their level of vulnerability is important to enhance management and conservation efforts. The aim of the study was to map inland wetlands and assess their distribution pattern and vulnerability to natural and human disturbances such as climate change (temperature increase) and human activities by the year 2080. Inland wetland types i.e. for...
متن کاملCitizen noise pollution monitoring
In this paper we present a new approach to monitor noise pollution involving citizens and built upon the notions of participatory sensing and citizen science. We enable citizens to measure their personal exposure to noise in their everyday environment by using GPS-equipped mobile phones as noise sensors. The geo-localised measures and user-generated meta-data can be automatically sent and share...
